screen capturing tools (free[ish]!)

Wanna record a screenshot or capture video of something you can play on your desktop . . . or even create a video of something you are doing on your desktop (like my typing of this message)?

For Mac, try Capture Me (free!): http://www.download.com/Capture-Me/3000-2192_4-10302571.html

For PC, try Snag It (free trial): http://www.download.com/Snagit/3000-2192_4-10004813.html

For Mac or PC, try Jing. I've not played with this one, but it looks great! Free, too. It's at http://www.jingproject.com/

Enjoy!

  1. Some *very* cool things about Jing (over Capture Me):

    1. You can actually write on the images. Way cool!
    2. Jing holds onto your history (whereas Capture Me places the images where ever you want but doesn't default to some system that keeps everything together)
    3. You can share! Instantly. Via an ftp program or the Screencast (or Flickr or your clipboard or simply as a file on your own system).

Take a look at this recent post regarding "Top 10 Things to do with JINGS." Interesting! Fun! See http://blog.jingproject.com/2009/03/top-10-things-to-do-with-jings.html

  2. The only problem I got with Jing was the SWF format of a created file. Capture Me does mute QuickTime movies and that is really easy to work with if you have Mac. Great programs though!

  3. Ah! I didn't realize that. Thanks for pointing htat out. The fact that Capture Me does captures as QuickTime is a big enough draw to me to stay with it. Though I will try Jing. Sounds too fun not to.
